The history of the “Mashie”
A typical 5-iron iron has 30 degrees of loft. The Mashie we will supply you with will have a similar loft.
A “Mashie” is an iron headed club with a moderate amount of loft. Its forerunner was the “Lofting Iron” which as the name suggests was used to play the ball more through the air than along the ground. In the 1880’s the heads of lofting irons became shorter and this type of club quickly became known as the “Mashie”. It is not known who coined the term first, but it is known that the great professional J.H.Taylor ( who would win the Open Championship five times ) was famed for playing shots with this type of club which stopped very quickly on the green, which was radically novel at the time. Most golfers would recognise that to do this is likely to cause the taking of a divot from the fairway, and so it may be that the term “mashie” relates to the action of the grass being cut or “mashed up”.
